Making energy performance certificates smarter, simpler, and more accessible — across Europe
The OpenBEP4EU project is developing an open-source, universal, and standardised engine for Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), along with a central data hub. Our goal is to simplify how EPCs are calculated and verified throughout Europe, making the process more transparent, cost-effective, and user-friendly.
Whether you’re a homeowner, policymaker, architect, or energy expert, OpenBEP4EU is designed to support you with reliable and understandable tools for improving building energy performance.
A Smarter Way to Assess Buildings
EPCs are meant to tell us how a building performs in terms of energy use and sustainability — but too often, they fall short. They can be inconsistent, expensive, or difficult to interpret.
OpenBEP4EU changes that. By unifying and simplifying the process, we’re helping to:
- Lower the cost of generating EPCs
- Improve their quality and accuracy
- Unlock more value — from energy savings and higher property values to better comfort, safety, and health
- Make energy performance understandable for everyone — not just experts
Aligned With European Goals
OpenBEP4EU contributes directly to the New European Bauhaus Initiative, supporting a future where buildings are not only efficient, but also sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically enriching. By providing reliable and comparable data on building performance, we help shape a built environment that reflects European values and environmental ambitions.
A Robust Framework for the Future
We’re delivering a software implementation of the ISO 52000 family of standards — creating the EU Kernel EPC Engine. This will support a harmonised and coordinated rollout of the next-generation EPC system across all EU Member States.
By making building performance data accessible to key stakeholders — such as building owners, financial institutions, and energy service providers—we’re also laying the groundwork for new, sustainability-focused financial products and renovation strategies.
Core elements of the project include:
- The EPC Support Team – A dedicated group working to drive adoption and guide stakeholders through implementation.
- The Sustainable Design Data Hub – A collaborative platform for sharing, accessing, and researching building data, supporting sustainable architecture and design in line with European Bauhaus principles.
Built on Trust and Transparency
All data exchange within OpenBEP4EU is aligned with the principles of the Common European Energy Data Space. This ensures data sovereignty, ownership, and trust are maintained for all parties involved.
To ensure our solution works in the real world, we’ll be piloting and validating it in five diverse European regions: Greece, Denmark, Spain, Cyprus, and Switzerland— each representing a unique mix of climate, building types, and national EPC schemes.
